Gun Control Now!

When I was in 7th grade, I remember after school we had a lockdown because a 9th grader had a gun. We were held for about an hour while the kid was apprehended by police. Back then I didn’t think much about it, because this was about 5 years before Columbine. This however was not the only exposure I had to potential gun violence. I lived in a neighborhood where gangs were prevalant. There was even a gang shooting down the street from where I lived.

The most terrifying experience I had, was when I was walking home from school one day. Another 8th grader pulled out a gun and started shooting it up in the air. I was beyond terrified. This was the same kid who bullied me at school when I was in 2nd grade. One day in 2nd grade, he pushed me up against a wall & started to punch me in the stomach over and over again. Six years later & here I am just 15 feet away from him, while he points a handgun up in the air & shoots. I almost froze in complete terror. I almost shit my pants. Fortunately, I got away from him without being shot, but I tell you, to this day, I remember that kind of terror. Here’s the thing, after Columbine there have been 376 school mass shootings with 348,000 children going through this. Imagine what fear they are living in today. Imagine the fear of parents every time they send their children off to school

Today, there was reports of an active shooter at a school in Spanish Fork, Utah. While it turned out to be a false alarm, my friend, waited for over an hour to hear updates, while her child was held in lockdown at school. Imagine being that parent. Imagine wondering if you’d see your child alive again. Imagine wondering whether you would have to identify your child by their green sneakers, as what happened in Uvalde. This is the world our children are growing up in. While I was praying for her child to be okay, I was simultaneously relieved that my own grand niece & nephew were an hour away & safe. We should not have to live like this.

Congress must Act & they must act NOW. However, instead of fighting to ban AR-15s, they are too busy banning black history books, gender affirming care, abortions & drag queen story hour. Those things don’t kill our children, guns do. I am not saying we need to abolish the 2nd Amendment, Although I do think the lives of 2nd graders are far more important than the 2nd amendment. However, I am saying We need Congress to Act now to pass sensible gun laws that actually reduce gun violence. They need to pass laws that keep guns out of the hands of children & people with mental illnesses. They need to ban deadly assault weapons such as AR-15s. If you own an AR-15, you don’t need it to hunt animals, unless you are completely disturbed. AR-15s are generally used for one thing, hunting humans. It’s time, we stop the hunting of humans. The truth is 71% of Americans say gun laws should be stricter, including about half of Republicans, the vast majority of Democrats and a majority of those in gun-owning households. So call your representative and Senator & urge them to pass gun safety laws. Google the number. It takes only a few seconds.
